In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route, which surrounds the capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. It is located in southern Israel within Refaim Park. Ein Laban is the nearest. Nahal Ein Kerem is the northern entrance.

נווה פריצקי The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was opened on Thursday by Jerusalem and the heritage minister Ze'evElkin and Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon as well as a multitude of cyclists were also present.

Jerusalem was once a well-known tourist destination due to its rich history. Today, apart from its rich history the city also offers modern tourism." Elkin said. Elkin's Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.



נווה פריצקי Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project was a key tool in realizing the vision of shifting the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem. "The new tunnel will connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path. The objective is to promote cycling among the residents of Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently utilized as an infrastructure tunnel that includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The current works include road construction, the installation of blowers and advanced safety and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for the public to pass through at all times of the year.

The Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreational areas, like Ein Kerem, a neighborhood that includes a biblical aquarium and zoo as well as historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
